Next on my itinerary was lunch/dinner at a restaurant called The Present Moment Café. Naturally, the name of their establishment intrigued me and when I learned it was an organic, vegan and raw café, I was even more sold.
There just aren’t places like this in Toledo and I wanted to eat somewhere unique on my trip. I was once vegetarian for health reasons and never truly ate at a place that catered to this lifestyle. Even though I now eat meat, I still have fondness for those who do not as it is an all-around beneficial and beautiful practice.
I didn’t know too much about the raw food movement, so I was a bit surprised that there no foods with beans. I decided upon an entrée called Tacos Of Life, which featured “tacos” with romaine lettuce as the shell, a pâté made from nuts, salsa, guacamole, bean sprouts, jalapeno vinaigrette, and coconut “sour cream.” The waitress assured me their food would not skimp on flavor and I’m proud to report she was right. The dish also came with dehydrated tortilla chips made from flaxseed and corn, made by the café.
I also ordered a smoothie made of banana, strawberry and (I believe) coconut milk. Yummmmm! I got my smoothie to-go and headed over to one of the local beaches, St. Augustine Beach. I’m not a big fan of swimming in the ocean (plus it was too cold) but I did enjoy wading in it at the shoreline and the super-soft sand beneath my feet. There weren’t many people there at this point and the waves were rising, so the sound was beautiful.
Ending my trip with the wholesome meal and the ocean was perfect. Nature is something that really allows me to center myself and be present. I am very thankful to have been able to take this trip to a warmer climate and experience new things.
